As with anything, these herbs need to be used with caution, but I would think they would only cause problems when used in excess. I ate many of these herbs but obviously not as a main course, more of a seasoning. To cause any damage you would have to use a lot!! I actually have her book and I think it is a really good resource but shouldn’t be taken totally to heart. After all, you’re only basing information off of one source. Look at other sources before deciding.
I used ginger all through out my pregnancy for heartburn and nausea and I have a happy healthy 4 week old! She even says to use ginger for those purpoises so I’m not sure what the website is referring to.
Yep i knew that. Check http://www.babycentre.co.uk there is a complete list of herbs etc and not only whether it is safe but how it is safe to use them. For example a lot of herbs are safe for normal culinary use but oils and the such aren’t. You would have to be ingesting some herbs in huge quantities for it to affect the baby. Personally I just preferred to avoid them all for the first 12 weeks just in case!
Fish that contains too much mercury, like tune. But salmon is good. You should avoid un-pasteurized cheeses. Crabs, shrimp and lobsters (since they are the bottom of the ocean feeders and thus may contain some bacteria).
liver has to be avoided.Apparently it has so much vitamin A in it that it could be harmful to baby.
If you are nauseous then definitely stay away from anything with sage in it. It makes nausea much worse.
Stay away from coffee and peanuts.
motzarella and patte
Foods to avoid include:
peanuts and foods containing peanut products if you, the baby’s father or siblings have certain allergic conditions such as hay fever, asthma or eczema
pâté
mould-ripened soft cheese (Brie, Camembert, goat’s cheese, etc)
unpasteurised milk
liver or liver products
shark, swordfish and marlin (all contain high levels of mercury)
too much caffeine and alcohol
raw eggs and food containing raw or partially cooked eggs
Although liver is a good source of iron, pregnant women should avoid eating it because it is high in vitamin A. It is also a good idea to take supplements containing 10mcg of vitamin D each day.
