Have You Experienced Any Unusual Home Remedies For Colds From Ancestral Knowledge ?

Did they work ? Did they taste horrible ? My grandmother mixed up a herbal mix with honey and vinegar that was very hard to swallow and tasted, “ecchh”.

Hm mm, I don’t know if my answer is fully ancestral but I have tried numerous home remedies to fix common colds and flu’s in myself and my family.
Chicken noodle soup has now been scientifically proven to help beat the common cold.
I have recently tried pouring hydrogen peroxide into my ears to beat anything that causes my glands to swell in my neck with success.
My best home remedy is for a sore throat, and I gargle with a mixture of cayenne pepper and warm water as much as possible at the first symptoms of a sore throat and it takes care of it almost immediately nine times of out ten.
So these are my top three home remedies but they were not passed down from ancestors. I’m the first hippy child in my family so I use the internet, and more specifically, http://www,earthclinic.com for any and all of my home remedy needs. I hope you do the same!
    Cheers

Once i was told to completely ignore my symptoms…You know when your sick and all you want to do if curl up and sleep, well instead I went to school that day and acted like a total nutter (as i would if i weren’t feeling like crap,) and although it sounds crazy i felt completely fine when i got home, my cold was gone. My grandma used to think that half of your sickness was in your mind ergo if you don’t think your sick you won’t feel sick.
Sorry i know this wasn’t exactly a “remedy”

My grandma made us a drink of lemonade, whiskey and honey that made you sweat and sleep and calm your cough, also mustard plasters on the chest for congestion. The drink was so horrible tasting we tried to throw it in the sink when she wasn’t looking – the mustard plasters usually put us to sleep.

my nan swears on baking soda and lukewarm water and to be honest so do i. i gargle it on first sign of sore throat. i put it on spots and the bad stuff comes out. also when i was young i had an abcess on my gum. nothing the dentist gave me worked so i rinsed it and my mouth with this mixture and 10mins later it burst then went away. it works for loads of ailments

Honey and cider vinegar is an old tried and true remedy. My grandma used to mix that up for us too…….If it doesn’t kill you, it might help you.

My Vietnamese roommates had me do this when I had a cold – it felt a lil’ better:
    add to boiling water:
a chopped lime (chop it into rings)
    handful of bean sprouts
remove from stove and sit over it with a blanket covering you and the pot – breath deeply those sour fumes for about 1/2 hour.
My Taiwanese roomy had me do this:
Shred a ginger root and boil on stove or in microwave (as we did in our dorm room). As the ginger becomes tender, drink the hot liquid – really heats you up inside. Better than vinegar at least.
